Rayados defeated Club Tigres 1-0 in the 132nd edition of the Clásico Regio, played in the Round of 16 of the Leagues Cup, at the Shell Energy Stadium in Houston.

The match began full of intensity with Rayados stalking the opponent's goal, however, they were unable to make their chances count in the first half.

Sergio Canales gave the first warning at minute 3 when he shot towards the goal, but defender Samir Caetano got down well to send the ball to a corner kick.

Caetano himself committed what appeared to be a foul on Maxi Meza inside the box at minute 8, but two minutes later, after reviewing the VAR, the referee changed the decision and awarded a free kick on the edge of the box.

At 16', Sergio Canales provided a "taquito" pass for Jesus Gallardo, who shot powerfully, but the ball went wide of the opponent's goal.

Minutes later, Sergio Canales again set up Jesus Gallardo, who sent a low cross for Rogelio Funes Mori, but Samir Caetano got it out of the way and came close to scoring an own goal.

At 21', Joao Rojas took a powerful, well-placed shot from outside the box, but goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman made a save and sent the ball to the corner.

 The felines' clearest chance came at 33', when Andre-pierre Gignac took a shot and Héctor Moreno sent it to the corner. 

In the second half, the match was deadlocked in the midfield, but in the final stretch, Sergio Canales took a penalty kick to score his first goal with Monterrey and give Rayados a place in the Quarter-finals.

 At 69', Sebastián Cordova took a half-volley, but his shot went over Estaban Andrada's goal.

At 80', Sergio Canales passed to Rogelio Funes Mori, who controlled the ball and shot at goal, but Nahuel Guzman sent the ball to the corner.

Sergio Canales took a powerful low shot at minute 89, but the feline goalkeeper dived low to send the ball to the corner.

In stoppage time, Javier Aquino fouled Ali Avila inside the box. The referee reviewed the play in the VAR and awarded Monterrey a penalty kick.
