Rayados de Monterrey tied 0-0 with Toluca in Matchday 7 of the Clausura 2024 at Estadio BBVA.
A great night from visiting goalkeeper Thiago Volpi and two disallowed goals prevented the team from earning three points.
Prior to the start of the match, Club de Futbol Monterrey and the fans paid an emotional tribute to Jonathan Orozco for his almost 20-year soccer career, after he announced his retirement from the field.
With the presence of military personnel, the 111th Anniversary of the Mexican Army was commemorated, and the fans sang the National Anthem.
The first half of the match began with Rayados looking for the opponent's goal and, despite their attempts, the scoreboard did not move.
In the 10th minute, Gerardo Arteaga made a great defensive play, blocking a shot by Marcel Ruíz and sending the ball to the corner kick.
Minutes later, Germán Berterame received a cross from Gerardo Arteaga, but failed to make proper contact and the ball ended up in a goal kick.
Esteban Andrada made a great save at 28' to send the ball to the corner kick.
At minute 40, the referee showed the red card to Federico Pereira for a foul on Germán Berterame. However, after reviewing the VAR, he rectified the decision and the match continued 11 vs. 11.
In the second half, Fernando Ortíz's men generated more dangerous plays, but were unable to score.
Jesús Gallardo had the first scoring opportunity of the second half when he finished off a low cross from Luis Romo at minute 52, but his shot went wide of the goal.
Minutes later, Sergio Canales took a corner kick and Gerardo Arteaga headed in, but goalkeeper Tiago Volpi prevented the Albiazul goal.
At minute 62, Jorge "Corcho" Rodríguez made a great pass to Luis Romo, who shot inside the box, but Volpi denied him. Erick Aguirre grabed the rebound and took a shot, but again the visiting goalkeeper saved.
Gerardo Arteaga sent in a cross at 68'. Jesús Gallardo arrived from outside the box to shoot with his left foot, but his shot went over the goal.
At 90', "Corcho" Rodríguez made a great play and set up Jesus Gallardo, who crossed for Germán Berterame. The striker headed the ball into the back of the net, but the referee ruled the goal offside and disallowed the goal.
Minutes later, Jean Meneses shot from outside the area, but the ball went just wide of Esteban Andrada's goal.
From a free kick by "Corcho" Rodriguez, Luis Romo headed the ball into the back of the net. However, after reviewing the play in the VAR, the referee disallowed the goal due to Luis Romo's offside.
With this result, Rayados reached 15 points and moved into third place in the General standings.
This Friday, February 23, at 8:10 p.m., Monterrey will visit FC Juarez for Matchday 8 of the Clausura 2024.
